As we mentioned at the beginning of this Rotary year, our Wine Fellowship has some excess funds in our treasury and has been assisting our members and their clubs to do humanitarian projects around the world. The following is a list of those projects that we are presently involved in along with the status of each:
  1. GG # 2568623 – Advanced Incubators for ELBW Infants – ($34,100; RWAF $10,500) Three Giraffe Incubators, Model ATO, have been purchased and installed in the Marmara University Pendik Training & Research Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to care for the severely underweight premature babies.  The official handover ceremony is scheduled at Marmara Üniversitesi Pendik Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi on 14 April 2025 at 2 pm. This project was done in conjunction with our Istanbul Loval Chapter and received contributions from nineteen Rotary club and districts.

  2. GG # 2571526 – Manila Caregiver Training($184,060; RWAF $10,750) Partnering with Oberhausen RC and the German Local Chapter, this project will train 192 impoverished women taken out of the slums of Manila, in the Philippines, to become medical caregivers so as to provide job skills and a reliable source of income for the women to support themselves and their families and at the same time to improve the overall health care in Manila. This grant has just been approved by TRF and funding by the 29 clubs and districts involved, has begun. A video about one woman who graduated from the first of these projects can be found with this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztew_93kbFs&t=3s

  3. GG # 2573415 Save the Bees ($95,350; RWAF $10,500) – This project is a holistic program of actions involving multiple stakeholders (beekeepers, farmers, local governments, schools, nature conservation groups and Rotarians) to combat the invasive Asian hornet, which poses a severe threat to bee population, biodiversity and local agriculture in the Limburg, Flanders area in Belgium. UPDATE: This GG has just been approved and the funding process has begun.

  4. GG # 2578844– Improve Water, Sanitation & Hygiene at Rosemoor Home for the Aged ($103,660; RWAF $10,500) – This project will provide a new and more efficient water heating system and new and expanded laundry and kitchen equipment to improve the living conditions for the rapidly growing care facility located in Orange, Western Cape, in South Africa. This project will be proposed at the beginning of the next Rotary year, and it will involve contributions from many clubs and districts.

  5. GG # 2352037 – Early Intervention & Referral Program for Victims of Child Sex Trafficking in the Greater Houston Area and Adjoining Coastal Region – (RWAF $5,000). After some trial and tribulation this project has been successfully concluded. Through targeted training, prevention education, early intervention, and survivor advocacy, this project has delivered measurable results and meaningful impact in it’s overall effort to deal with human sex trafficking.

  6. Lebanon Disaster Relief – (RWAF $10,000) – With the war that has been raging in the area, there have been massive migration of people from all over the mid-east through Lebanon creating a huge humanitarian problem. This includes 25% of the population of Lebanon, roughly 1.4 million people. The Beirut Cedars RC has been doing an incredible job trying to provide aid to these refugees and they set up the Los Angeles Cedars Rotary Foundation with their sister club in Los Angeles.

  7. PolioPlus/EndPolioNow – The RWAF is about to send in another contribution to help in the eradication of polio. Our total contribution is approaching $200,000 USD, which equates to $600,000 with the Gates Foundation match, and it will prevent approximately 600,000 children from contracting this dread disease.
